Google Alphabet’s Sidewalk Labs Hoping to redevelop Toronto Waterfront

Larry Paige loves to fix cities using technology. His first city might be in Canada and not the US.

Sidewalk Labs have applied with City of Toronto to renovate the city’s waterfront. The goal is to create connected and high tech city.

Before applying in Toronto, Sidewalk Labs have considered Denver and Detroit.

Company wants to build the urban centres “from the internet up,” with the same tools and rules that have provided success at many tech companies.

Waterfront Toronto was created in 2001 and is now accepting bids to revitalize city’s downtown water front.

Sidewalk Labs created in 2015 is a Google Alphabet company that imagines, designs, tests, and builds urban innovations to help cities meet their biggest challenges.

Pythian, Ottawa based company, received $15m in funding

Pythian has received funding to further geographic expansion into Europe as well as to repurchase shares from some long-term shareholders.

Pythian is a global IT services company, based mainly in Ottawa, that specializes in designing, implementing, and managing systems that directly contribute to revenue and business success.

Jobs website posted a list of top ranked jobs in Canada and the tech jobs dominated the space.

The top 3 jobs were Full stack (backend + frontend) developer, DevOps (systems admin + shell scripting developer), and Backend Developer.

According to Paul D’Arcy, senior vice-president of Indeed, in a statement:

Canada is a “booming hub for tech innovation”.

“The first thing that surprised us was how dominant tech-related roles were. We expected it to be a more diverse list that better represented the diversity of the Canadian economy, but it turns out that there’s been a lot of growth in the tech sector in Canada.”

Because there is such a big demand, there are not enough qualified applicants to fill the roles.  Companies keep the jobs open for a lot longer because they can not find the right talent.

The growth is here to stay. Canada tech industry is almost a $120b dollar industry, 7% of Canadian GDP.
