Facebook to open AI research lab in Montreal

Facebook is the latest company, following in footsteps of Microsoft and Google, to open AI office in Montreal , to capitalize on its cheap labour, major universities like McGill and Concordia and its established artificial intelligence sector.

Facebook’s new lab also know as FAIR Montreal will be led by McGill university professor, Joelle Pineau.

Facebook is catching up with Google and Microsoft who already have offices / labs in Montreal.

Facebook’s lab is already up and running with few researchers setting up their desks and getting ready. Facebook expects to have 10 employees shortly, with 20 more hires within the next few years or so.

McGill Professor Pineau was educated in United States but has decided to come back to Quebec , Canada even though a lot of people advised her against moving back to Quebec. But she said she proved them wrong:

“For many years, I’ve seen a steady stream of talented AI researchers . . . leaving my lab but also leaving our country,” Pineau told dignitaries, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. “I hope that some of the students who are here today will find an opportunity that matches their interest and their talent.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre was on hand for the opening of the lab. Trudeau said:

So it should come as no surprise that more tech giants are choosing our cities as their homes away from home.

Facebook also promised to invest $7 million into Montreal’s AI research and studies.

Jobs website Indeed.ca posted a list of top ranked jobs in Canada and the tech jobs dominated the space.

The top 3 jobs were Full stack (backend + frontend) developer, DevOps (systems admin + shell scripting developer), and Backend Developer.

According to Paul D’Arcy, senior vice-president of Indeed, in a statement:

Canada is a “booming hub for tech innovation”.

“The first thing that surprised us was how dominant tech-related roles were. We expected it to be a more diverse list that better represented the diversity of the Canadian economy, but it turns out that there’s been a lot of growth in the tech sector in Canada.”

Canadian Startups Can Now Post Jobs for Free on Facebook

Forget LinkedIn and Monster – where posting jobs can cost as much as $1,000 after taxes – now you can reach millions of candidates by posting your jobs on Facebook. The cost? $0. But hurry up – free job listings might not be free forever.

The Facebook on their blog post said:

We know that finding the right talent can be a challenge. 40% of US small businesses report that filling jobs was more difficult than they expected, which is surprising when you consider that these small businesses also employ nearly half of the country’s workforce.

We’re focused on building new ways to help make it easier for businesses to interact with the over 1 billion people visiting Pages every month. Businesses and people already use Facebook to fill and find jobs, so we’re rolling out new features that allow job posting and application directly on Facebook.

Beginning today, businesses in the US and Canada will be able to post job openings, and their future employees will be able to easily find those posts on their Page or in the new jobs bookmark. This new experience will help businesses find qualified people where they’re already spending their time—on Facebook and on mobile.
